Male Chest Reduction
While men are often embarrassed by excess fat in the chest, it is a very common condition. One in three men complain of having a chest that is larger than they prefer. The condition is called gynocomastia, but it is commonly referred to as "man boobs." An enlarged chest can make it difficult to find shirts that fit or it can lead to embarrassment at the gym or swimming pool. Liposculpture of the male chest is a simple 1 hour procedure. Patients are able to return to regular work and activities the following day and are back to the gym in a week or two. The results from male chest reduction can vary from moderate to dramatic. The more fat that is in the chest area, the greater the possible reduction.

What are the benefits to male chest reduction?
Reducing the size of the male chest can make a man look less feminine, improve confidence, and make buying clothing easier. The chest can be reduced by 40 to 60%, depending on the consistency of the tissue in the chest. There are usually no visible scars and there are no sutures or stitches. The procedure is quick and most men are able to return to work (office jobs) the following day and back to vigorous exercise in about two weeks.
Am I a good candidate for male chest reduction?
If you are over age 21, are healthy and have a chest that is more full or fatty than you like, you may be a good candidate. If you are under age 21 or are very thin and have large breasts, you may have enlargement of the glandular tissue, not excess fat. If you have excess glandular tissue (not excess fat), liposculpture is not the correct procedure for you. If you have already had previous liposuction on your chest or been told that you have "true gynocomastia" or enlargement of the glandular tissue, you are not a good candidate for liposculpture.
What is the male chest reduction procedure like?
The male chest reduction is a simple procedure that takes about 1 hour and is performed in our office in Beverly Hills with only local anesthesia. No IV sedation is used and patients walk-in and walk-out. Patients remain awake and alert, listen to music or talk with the team during their procedure. Most patients report that the procedure is comfortable or nearly pain free.
The procedure is safe and simple. First, the skin is numbed with lidocaine and two to three tiny punctures (smaller than a spaghetti noodle!) are made on each side of the chest. If you are having your abdomen treated at the same time, only one additional puncture is required on each side. A small instrument called a canula is inserted and fat in the treated area is numbed with a saline-based solution. This numbing process is called tumescence. Once the fat is numbed, it is removed by the canula with mild suction. We use a gentle micro-liposculpture technique with instruments that are ½ the size of traditional liposuction canulas. In fact, these instruments are smaller than an angel hair pasta noodle. The smaller instruments used by Beverly Hills Liposculpture are dull (so there is no chance of unwanted puncture or damage) and lead to more precise results and faster recovery.
What is the recovery from male chest reduction?
After the procedure, patients feel very little discomfort. You will be able to leave our office and walk around downtown Beverly Hills or have lunch. A light compression garment similar to a black vest is worn for 7 days, depending on individual comfort levels. Some patients with loose skin tone may choose to wear the garment for longer, but it is not required. There are no stitches and the tiny punctures close on their own in about 48 hours. Some patients experience almost no bruising while others may have a significant amount. About 1 week after the procedure your chest will begin to get stiff and tight, rather like a piece of wood has been inserted under your skin. This hardness is normal and lasts a month or two. During this period your chest might feel itchy or sunburned. Your chest will slowly soften up and return to normal.
What are the aftercare instructions?
After the procedure we will put you into a compression garment that looks like black vest with a zipper in the front. The garment is very thin, so it can be hidden under almost all shirts. Under the compression garment we will place absorbent pads over your adit sites to help absorb any drainage. The pads should be changed every 8 to 12 hours until you stop leaking, which usually ends in 2 days. You can shower any time after the first day, however if you are leaking, you may prefer to wait to shower until the leaking has stopped. After you stop leaking, you can launder your garment in a washing machine. You should wear the garment for the first 7 days and nights. After 7 days, the garment is optional. Many people find that wearing the garment for certain activities, like exercise, feels good for up to a month or two after their procedure. After 7 days, you can treat your chest as usual, including any shaving, laser hair removal, sun tanning, lotions or exercise.
Will I be left with empty or sagging skin?
If you have good skin tone and you are under age 60, you will not have any looseness or sagging skin. If your skin is very loose from a large weight loss or if you are over age 60, your chest will be flatter and much improved after liposculpture, but you still may have some looseness or laxity to your skin tone.
Do I need to add SmartLipo skin tightening?
If you have very soft or loose skin, have a very large chest, or are over age 60, you may want to add the SmartLipo laser skin tightening to your chest reduction. SmartLipo can help further tighten the skin after the fat has been removed. If you have firm skin or your chest is medium sized, you probably do not need to add SmartLipo.
Are there any scars from male chest reduction?
There are usually not any noticeable scars from a male chest reduction. The procedure uses two or three very tiny holes on each breast and the holes usually fade to match the color of the skin over time. If you have a very hairy chest, the holes will be hidden immediately.
Will male chest reduction make my chest totally flat?
Maybe. We will always take away as much fat and tissue as possible, but we cannot guarantee that your chest will be entirely flat. The shape of your pectoral muscles and the amount of glandular tissue in your chest will determine the eventual shape of your chest. If you have a flat muscle and an average amount of glandular tissue, your chest will look healthy, but flat. If you have a very well developed pectoral muscle, your chest will be in a rounder shape.
Can I get rid of the fat in my armpit or on the sides of the chest?
Many patients choose to have the armpit treated at the same time as the chest. In fact, if you have a lot of fullness under your armpits, it is strongly recommended to add the armpits for the most natural result. The armpit is an additional $600. The addition of the armpit does not affect the recovery.
Will it change my nipple size, color, placement or shape?
No. The size, color, placement and shape of your nipples will not change. The chest itself will be smaller, but the nipple will not change. If you are unhappy with your nipples, you should seek a different kind of surgical procedure.
Do I need to shave my chest before the procedure?
No. You do not need to shave your chest before the procedure.
How much does a chest reduction with liposuction cost?
The male chest reduction with liposculpture is $3400 if it is performed alone. If you add the chest on to other procedures, like the abdomen, the chest is $2400. All our prices are all inclusive and there are no additional fees or taxes.
